Grace Jones defines the physical manifestation of fierce. So it seems fitting that the Voice of a Woman Festival is launching on her impressively strong shoulders. The festival, which will take place at dual locations - the Carib Cinema in Kingston and Cove Cinema in Ocho Rios - will surround the Jamaican premiere of the biographical documentary Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami.
Voice of a Woman promises to be an annual festival spotlighting women in music, the arts, and film while simultaneously exploring the status of women and girls in Jamaica. Proceeds from the festival will go to support the work of Woman Inc.
Jones had had an impressive career and can safely be considered a pop icon, who was willing to not merely step outside the box but disregard it all together. According to a release submitted by the VOW festival Bloodlight and Bami is a story of “talent, uncompromising resilience”, and “tenacity”. Jone’s impressive film career has included roles in the James Bond flick A View to a Kill,Conan the Destroyer and Boomerang.
While the festival opens with a screening of Bloodlight and Bami on Saturday night, Sunday will feature a full day of screenings, conversations and an after party. Short films being screened on Sunday include Michelle Serieux’ Sugar, Toni Blackford’s Cleaning House, Allison Harrison’s Proscenium and Danielle Russell’s This City of Mine.
Voice of a Woman 2017 will also feature conversations with Queen Ifrica and Laura Facey as well a panel discussion with Carolyn Cooper, Veronica Saulter, Fae Ellington and Gillian Mason.
Voice of a Woman takes place on Saturday, January 28, 2018, at Carib Cinema (5:00 pm) and on Sunday, January 29, 2018, at Cove Cinema (10:00 am - 8:00 pm). There will also be an after-party at Devon House on Saturday at 10:00 pm and a closing party at Island Village on Sunday 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm.
